Announcing the immediate availability of the PDF render engine of Document Toolkit as open source. Document Toolkit is an extensible document viewer for Silverlight and LightSwitch. At its core the viewer is capable of displaying XPS documents. The extensible architecture of Document Toolkit enables support for document types other than XPS. Among others a reader for Microsoft Office documents exists, as well as readers for image types such as TIFF. These document reader extensions have been available as open source for a while now, and today the open source PDF reader is added to this list.
Document Toolkit itself remains a closed-source, commercial product that is actively maintained and supported. The open source PDF render engine is not a standalone document viewer, it's designed to be an extension to Document Toolkit. First Floor Software will continue to update the PDF render engine and invites you to take part in the process and help improve the PDF reader for Silverlight.
You can view and download the PDF render engine source code on the Codeplex project site Document Toolkit Extensions. The source code of the PDF reader is available under Microsoft Public License.
Next to open sourcing the PDF reader, a new update of Document Toolkit is now available for download. The December 2011 Update contains various fixes. The detailed change list is available in the offline and online help.
